Many years ago I interviewed a computer consultant who joked that he was the guy who actually read the books that came with the software. That was the genesis of Doing What Works. I aspire to be the woman who not only reads the best advice about getting in shape or squeezing more fun out of an otherwise ordinary day, but takes that advice. As Jerry Seinfeld might say, that’s really the most important part of the advice, the taking. Most of us know what works, after all. But doing it? That’s the secret to life. I studied career change with an expert on the subject, What Color Is Your Parachute? author Dick Bolles, and got into radio. That’s when I met my husband, Darrell. We launched a radio syndication company and had our daughter, and I started writing books. When Katie was little I asked myself the same question people asked her: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I wanted to be the person who kept growing, and she became the person who inspires that. When the three of us tested advice from the experts about how harmful added sugar was, for example, we cut it out almost entirely. You won’t find us eating birthday cake at someone’s party, but you will find us almost obnoxiously cheerful and full of energy because we don’t. Are you getting the idea? Would you like to learn more, to get in on the fun we have as a family as we learn more? Every week for an hour we talk about things like befriending failure or having difficult conversations or breaking bad habits, and we share those conversations with you. We do that because we agree with Dilbert creator Scott Adams on the other secret to life: “Be useful.” And we hope you can join us! Doing What Works is distributed by the Talk Media Network.
